Non-technical: Do I require web hosting for my website?

As more and more businesses digitalize every day, the need for websites is increasing tremendously. A website allows businesses to generate traffic, facilitate sales, increase credibility, and much more. The first step that a business takes to have a website is they purchase a domain; however, most business owners fail to understand the need of getting web hosting or they simply do not understand why they need one. Let’s crack the nut today!

Well, getting the domain you desire is definitely a piece of great news for you! However, you need to bear in mind that everything that you see and interact with online requires a space to be visible, to have its identity, to show itself. Let’s start by you uploading a profile picture on Facebook. Your photo takes up space on your mobile phone right? Meaning, when you upload it on Facebook or your own personal website, it should require some space too. While Facebook has its own physical server (hosting) which keeps the photo in their space to be visible to your friends/families, your website doesn’t (at least in this scenario). Therefore, it’s impossible to dream of having a website without creating a server for yourself (which comes at a great price) or paying a lump sum to web hosting companies who rent out a small portion of their expensive physical server.

In a nutshell, your website requires a physical space to store every bit of information you put in it. Be it an article, a photo, or anything. Having a domain means you only own the name. Whereas getting web hosting means you own some space to store your website’s data. For instance, the reason why you can see our website by typing therundigital.com in your browser is that we own the domain. If we did not have web hosting, you won’t be able to see any information after typing the URL. Wanna know what’s an URL? We will cover it in our future posts!
